There are few as four surviving pieces of silver by Robert Gilchrist of Glasgow. Trained by William Clerk he is first mentioned in 1719.
Little is known about his career which is a mystery as he was trained by, arguably, the finest goldsmith in Glasgow at the time but does not appear to have made much impact. It seems likely that while working on his own, shown by the survival of his maker’s mark, he was mainly working for other makers.
