These are the words of Sir Anish Kapoor CBE RA, one of the most important and influential contemporary artists working presently, who is best known for his dominating sculptural installations and conceptual artworks.
Kapoor first turned to art in 1973, when he left his studies in Israel to attend Hornsey College of Art and the Chelsea School of Art and Design, where he has lived and work since then. He rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s with his large, ambitious sculptures which explored concepts of dualities such as matter-spirit, lightness-darkness, and conscious-unconscious.
Since the 1990s, he has become synonymous with large-scale works in highly reflective materials. His most notable sculptures have been the ArcelorMittal Orbit for the Olympic Park in London, Cloud Date in Chicago’s Millennium Park, and Leviathan in the Grand Palais in Paris.
