with Associate Director Alice Strang

Join Associate Director Alice Strang as she takes a closer look at the work and life of the Scottish Colourist S. J. Peploe in celebration of the 150th anniversary of his birth.

One of the most important Scottish artists of the 20th century, Peploe was the eldest and most successful of the four artists known as the ‘Scottish Colourists’, along with F. C. B. Cadell, J. D. Fergusson and G.L. Hunter. Peploe was described in The Times as "one of the most interesting and inspiring of Scottish painters...one of the few whose works were highly esteemed not only in Scotland, but in England and abroad." His work is held in numerous public collections in the UK and beyond.

In December 2021 we were delighted to present a celebratory section dedicated to Peploe in our flagship auction of Scottish Paintings & Sculpture.
