Watch | CADELL: A Colourist at Work

with Associate Director Alice Strang

Join Associate Director Alice Strang as she discusses the work of FCB Cadell, one of the most important Scottish artists of the twentieth-century, that featured in our CADELL: A Colourist at Work exhibition and will be offered in our 16 June 2022 Scottish Paintings & Sculpture auction.

Cadell was born in Edinburgh and lived there for most of his life. He studied at the Académie Julian in Paris and at the Academie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. His first solo exhibition was held at Doig, Wilson & Wheatley in the Scottish capital in 1908. A new studio in Edinburgh’s George Street and a breakthrough painting trip to Venice in 1910 saw Cadell emerge as an artist of style and originality in the pre-war period.

During the 1920s Cadell became celebrated for the still lifes and interiors of his studio practice, as well as for landscapes based on working en plein air in Scotland and France. His work was included in multiple solo and group exhibitions in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Paris.

Cadell visited the Hebridean island of Iona for the first time in 1912 and returned regularly thereafter. Iona’s ever-changing light conditions, natural beauty and expansive views provided endless inspiration for the artist.

Cadell was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour before his death in 1937. His work is held in numerous public collections.
