I am lucky enough to have several favourite lots in our Christmas auction of Jewellery, Watches & Silver taking place on the Tuesday 8th & Wednesday 9th December, live online. Here, I'll introduce you to a few of the highlights included in our sale...
- Ruth Davis, Head of Sale
Lot 98, this beautiful three stone emerald ring is definitely a highlight for me. The emeralds are not only very well matched, and a strong vivid colour, but also only subject to minor treatment and of Colombian origin, it’s a rare thing in a simple elegant mount; the yellow gold is a subtle but effective contrast to the green.
Opal bead necklaces are another of my favourites, and examples of this size (lot 47) are again not terribly common. By nature, each opal is completely unique, and while the piece itself is certainly very traditional, I think they offer a slightly more unusual option to their pearl counter-parts, and like the emerald is a very wearable piece.
Lot 110 appeals to the gemmologist in me, colour-change sapphires are rare, particularly ones which show a noticeable or pronounced colour change. Depending on if it is viewed in daylight or incandescent light, this example changes from blue to purplish blue. Like the emeralds it is a completely unique piece, no other colour-change sapphire will appear exactly the same, and I think a piece of jewellery which is constantly changing such an appealing notion.
Finally, while they may not be high value, I just fell in love with 153, a pair of gold pendant earrings modelled as grapes; and they serve to demonstrate that you don’t have to spend thousands of pounds to get a lovely piece of, wearable, slightly quirky piece of jewellery. I think they would be great dressed up or down, and they will always be a talking point!
