2021 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935), one of the most important Scottish artists of the 20th century. He was the eldest and most successful of the four artists known as the ‘Scottish Colourists’, along with Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, John Duncan Fergusson and George Leslie Hunter.

Peploe was born in Edinburgh. He trained at the Académie Julian in Paris and at the Royal Scottish Academy Life School in the Scottish capital. His first solo exhibition was held in 1903 and in 1910 he joined Fergusson in Paris. This led to two years spent at the very heart of the development of modern art.

On his return to Edinburgh, Peploe established a reputation as a painter of still lifes par excellence, as can be seen in The Statuette of the 1920s. It reveals the care with which he arranged his props, his pleasure in colour, drapery and reflections and his mastery of rhythm and structure. One of his favourite still-life objects, a cast of a torso of Venus, is key to the success of its composition.

Alongside his still lifes, Peploe was also celebrated for his landscape paintings. These he made en plein air during trips to France and throughout Scotland. His work was exhibited regularly in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London, in group exhibitions in Paris and in 1928 he had a solo show in New York. Peploe was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1927 and taught briefly at Edinburgh College of Art before his death in 1935. His work is held in numerous public collections.
