Sir Winston Churchill

A Signed Photograph

A signed photograph of Sir Winston Churchill seated at the Cabinet Table, valued at £1,200 – 1,800, is one of the more unusual lots for sale at our auction of Rare Books, Manuscripts, Maps & Photography on Thursday, 31 Jan 2019.

The silver print offered in our January auction shows Churchill resting his right hand on the edge of the Cabinet table, with the stamp of the photographer Walter Stoneman on the back of the mount. The mount is signed 'Winston S. Churchill 1945'.

Tucked behind the image, there is a compliments reading "With Mr Churchill's compliments and best wishes", dated 30th December 1945, on Chartwell headed paper with the additional address of 28 Hyde Park Gate, Churchill’s Kensington home.

During the Second World War, Winston Churchill maintained an enduring popularity, with his approval rating hitting 83% in the opinion polls in May 1945. To this day, Churchill is considered one of the country’s greatest wartime leaders, despite the Coservative Party’s loss to Labour’s Clement Atlee in the July 1945 election. A great speech writer and author, Churchill’s works are still highly sought after to this day, with items signed by Churchill particularly appealing to collectiors.

The photograph was given by Churchill to his wartime Dutch translator, Benjamin Barend van Leeuwen.
