Rare French Gothic Casket

14th Century Rare & Important French Gothic Casket - watch with Head of Sale Douglas Girton

Join Head of Sale Douglas Girton as he discusses this important 14th Century Gothic Ivory Casket, looking at the iconography and history behind this rare work of art. Leading our May 2021 Five Centuries: Furniture, Paintings & Works of Art auction, this rare work achieved an impressive £1,455,000 incl premium after competitive bidding across multiple phone lines - the highest price ever achieved for an object in an auction held in Scotland.

Currently only eight other complete secular ivory coffrets like the present one are known, so-called composite caskets, most of them in important museum collections around the world. The present example likely originated in a workshop in Paris around 1330, due to the similarities with the existing ones. The exact meaning behind the iconological programs of these caskets has long been a subject for discussion between scholars.
