Founded in London in 1968 by Paul Cornwall-Jones and established in New York in 1972, The Petersburg Press worked with numerous museums and many of the best artists of the 1960s and 1970s. They represented the graphics of Jim Dine, Richard Hamilton, Howard Hodgkin, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, Dieter Roth and Frank Stella. By the early 1980’s, the Petersburg Press was also acting as David Hockney’s worldwide agent.
Through the years, Petersburg Press organised many exhibitions around the globe, and published a wide range of books and posters. Collaborative publishing with the artists was integral in designing the posters printed by Petersburg Press. The artists would choose typeface, layout and sometimes add original drawing into the design. There was no standard size: each poster was designed to suit the image.
This Summer, in partnership with vintage poster specialists Tomkinson Churcher, we are excited to include 'Hockney to Hodgkin: Vintage Posters from The Petersburg Press' (Lots 329 - 345) in our 11 August auction. Here we take a look at a few highlights featuring in the forthcoming auction...
