Following on from our private loan exhibitions of British jewellery from the 1960s and 1970s Stardust and Glam Rocks in 2019 and 2021, respectively, we were delighted to be entrusted with the sale of two private collections of jewellery from that period in our 30 March 2022 Select Jewellery & Watches sale.
With the appetite for the period showing no signs of slacking, pieces by John Donald, Charles de Temple and Wendy Ramshaw raced past their high estimates in our Spring auction.
Competative bidding saw a two-strand ‘Wrapped Pearl’ necklace by Charles de Temple achieve £20,000* against an estimate of £4,000-6,000, with even some of the more experimental pieces by de Temple in non-precious metal selling for three times their low estimates.
Another highlight from this period was a series of jewels by John Donald set with orange topaz crystals, known in the trade as barley sugar topaz, which included a brooch, bracelet, ear pendants and a swivelling watch/brooch, which had been created in collaboration with renowned Swiss watchmaker Corum. The collection sold for a combined total of 17,250* against a low estimate of £5,100.
We are overjoyed that these pieces received the attention they deserved and sold so well. They were fantastic examples of the designers’ works, showcasing their incredible ability and unique designs. It was an absolute pleasure to have the opportunity to handle and catalogue these jewels and we know that the vendors are as pleased with the results as we are.
