Woodblock Prints by Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950)

Seven woodblock prints by Hiroshi Yoshida, including 'Winter in Taguchi' and 'Cherry Tree in Kawagoe' will be offered in the 18 September sale. Considered one of the leading figures of the Shin Hanga movement, Hiroshi Yoshida, began his career as an oil and watercolour painter. After winning several exhibition prizes, Yoshida turned to woodblock printmaking in the 1920s.

LOT 338 | SEVEN WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY HIROSHI YOSHIDA | £800-1,200 + fees

Hiroshi Yoshida's first seven wood blocks were printed by Watanabe Shozaburo, an important publisher and leading figure of the Shin Hanga movement. A well-travelled man, much of Yoshida’s early print work depicted western landscapes in the traditional Japanese woodblock style.

This album of views and street scenes from Japan from the late 19th century contains fifty hand colour-tinted albumen prints. Depicted are views and scenes from Takaboko, Nagasaki, Miyanoshita, Tonosawa and more.

Comprising of fifty-eight black and white and coloured postcards of China and a selection from Southeast Asia, this extensive collection also includes a photograph of A. Mills, the former collector of the postcards. 

 

LOT 46 | EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF POSTCARDS MOSTLY OF CHINA AND SOUTHEAST ASIA | £500-800 + fees

The postcards were originally sent by A. Mills (a policeman in Hong Kong at the time) to Jane Drummond MacDonald (1888-1950s) around 1908. Most of the postcards include captions such as 'Country Club, Shanghai' & 'Ming Tombs, Nanking', and "Mohamedan and Chinese Temples, Singapore' with a dedication to Miss Jane Drummond MacDonald by Mr Mills on the reverse.
