Our final auction of the year, Scottish Paintings & Sculpture, took place on the chilly evening of 7th December in Edinburgh. Clients enjoyed warming glasses of red wine, as some serious bidding got underway in the room, on the phone and from international bidders online. Head of Sale and auctioneer Nick Curnow reflects on some of the top lots and key moments of the auction.

The top lot of the night was George Leslie Hunter’s A Still Life of Fruit and Flowers with Persian Curtain. Strong bidding on the phone and in the saleroom, meant the picture finally sold for £221,000, against an estimate of £100,000-150,000.

Portrait Study of Nan Ivory had proven extremely popular when exhibited in London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. On sale day this translated to a sale at £81,250.

There remains a strong demand for works by John Bellany, with works from the 1970s proving particularly popular. Two phone bidders went head to head over Dew-Genen-Ny until the hammer finally fell at £42,500.

Harrington Mann’s Girl’s Head had captured hearts and imaginations, during viewing in Edinburgh, inspiring lots of bidding on the day. This translated to a strong price of £11,875, against an estimate of £3,000-5,000.
