Review | Scottish Paintings & Sculpture | Leading the market in 2014
This May we held our inaugural dedicated Scottish Paintings & Sculpture Evening Sale which was a resounding success with 84% of the lots sold and 37% of those lots exceeding their high estimate. Early in the sale we offered a fine group of portraits by Allan Ramsay and Sir Henry Raeburn which attracted strong bidding from both sides of the Atlantic.
The Glasgow Boys were, again, well represented with Charles Hodge Mackie's shepherd scene and John Lavery's beach scene leading the group at £32,450 and £45,650 respectively.
We were very pleased to offer a number of works by all four of the Scottish Colourists including a beautiful view of Ben More on Mull from the north end of Iona by F.C.B Cadell, which sold for £66,050.
The final lot of the sale, the early John Bellany's Old Astronomer realised £49,250.
Earlier in the year we were honoured to be asked to auction the finest collection of watercolours by Sir William Russell Flint ever to appear on the open market. Flint spent much of his career in London society but was born and bred a Scotsman, growing up in Portobello, outside Edinburgh. All but one of the 21 paintings found buyers with the highlights including Cecilia Reading Poems, which reached £49,250, and Dalitha, selling for £26,250.
The market for Contemporary & Post War Art in Scotland is showing increasing depth and breadth with consistent competitive bidding for William Gear, Eduardo Paolozzi, Stephen Conroy and Callum Innes, among others.
This spring Lyon & Turnbull also continued their tradition of offering collections directly from artist's studios with the sale of 15 works from the studio on Philip Reeves. Our regular involvement with the RSA and art colleges has helped us stay ahead of the emerging market for new talent in Scotland and we are always open to exciting opportunities within this field.
We look forward to continuing the successful sale season in the Autumn with two further sales which are still open to consignment. We hope to see you at our Edinburgh saleroom or at one of our events around the country soon.
