Note:In a letter to the current vendor Sir Robin Philipson writes ' Each year as high summer approaches I say to myself there will not be another painting of poppies: (they are so difficult) yet when I see them in all their splendour I weaken and one or two more come into existence. The process intrigues me; for I have to create the underpainting from the life version and then compile some notes and colour guidelines which are stored away for the months required for the paint - a monchrome in whites , to dry out. Then the layers of high keyed glazes begins and battle is joined.'
