Auction: Design Since 1860
rosewood, brass, lacquer and two ivory-inlaid drawer fronts, single drawer below with metal handle, stamped maker's mark HOWARD & SONS/ BERNERS ST
Note: Howard & Sons (1820-1947) were founded by John Howard in 1820 as a ‘Cabinet Manufacturer’, opening an upholstery workshop and showroom in 1832. They exhibited widely, from the Great Exhibition of 1851 to the Paris Exhibition of 1900 where they won one silver and two gold medals. Commissions included a bookcase designed by C.F. Hayward for John Jones, circa 1862, now in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum; sentry boxes at St. James' Palace; the ballroom floor of the Savoy Hotel; and twenty-four pieces of furniture in the Royal Collection, as well as numerous pieces in the private collection of HM The Queen at Sandringham and Balmoral. This cabinet incorporates several Oriental elements, including drawer fronts made of Meiji lacquered ivory panels of samurai, an early Cinnabar lacquer panel as the cupboard front, and a drawer handle and key adapted from Japanese sword fittings.
