Note: Dalou was a founder of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and a commander of the Legion of Honour known for his realistic and unpretentious depiction of the human form. Dalou openly sympathised with the working-classes, to the extent that his alignment with the Paris Commune in 1871 resulted in his exile to London until 1879. Despite this, his works were commissioned in Paris - from the monumental sculpture at the Place de la Nation to numerous decorative sculptures lining the new boulevards of the city.
