Note: After emigrating to Australia in 1851 with his wife and children, Alfred Eustace initially worked as a shepherd on the El Dorado Run in Victoria. He was known to have always carried a set of oil paints with him, and experimented with various painting techniques during his travels. Lacking canvas or board to paint on, Eustace sourced natural material, such as eucalyptus leaves, local to the area he worked in. On these, Eustace skilfully captured the essence of Australia's native bushland and the everyday lives of its people, and quickly became known as the ‘Bush Artist’.
