Rare Books, Manuscripts, Maps & Photographs ft. the Library of the Late William St Clair | 683
Auction: 2 February 2022 at 10:00 GMT
Kilmarnock: John Wilson, 1788. First edition, 8vo, half calf, lacking four leaves, early ownership inscription "Barr Moat" to title-page and a few notes and marks throughout, some browning and spotting [ESTC T124917 listing 17 copies, the work is, however, rare on the market]
Note: Born in Ayrshire, Lapraik was a contemporary and friend of Robert Burns. Burns penned three epistles to Lapraik in 1785 and the two were in correspondence, and both poets used the same printer when publishing their works in Kilmarnock in the 1780s. Burns, whose work had been published two years prior to Lapraik's, was evidently the more successful!
