Footnote
Note: Charles Fowler's work in Elgin is often denoted by fine quality, even in the smallest of items. While his hand is seen in various larger items including mugs and quaichs, his work is predominantly flatware.
He is unique in Elgin as he seems to have adopted an unofficial date letter system using not only the C and F of his makers punch struck to replicate a date letter (as seen here), but also had a variety of other punches from A - H. Whether this had any direct correlation with the date letter cycle in Edinburgh at the time is unknown but seems unlikely. It does however show an understanding of the regulations and practices and a local maker's attempt to work 'within' them.
