This poster was part of an advertising campaign series entitled ‘To Visit Britain’s Landmarks’. The series comprised a selection of follies and sometimes unusual attractions, encouraging the public to explore the British countryside.
Edward Bawden (1903–1989) was a designer, printer and illustrator. He trained at the Royal Collage of Art under Paul Nash. He was a war artist and afterwards worked on many book illustrations and for organisations such as Fortnum & Mason, the National Westminster Bank and London Transport. As well as posters, press advertisements and illustrations, he produced murals, wallpaper designs and textiles. He also did work for Wedgewood. His commission here for Shell features Walton Castle which is a 17th Century, Grade II listed castle set upon a hill in Clevedon, North Somerset. It was built on the site of an earlier Iron Age hill fort.
