This poster was part of an advertising campaign series entitled ‘To Visit Britain’s Landmarks, You Can be Sure of Shell’. The series comprised a selection of follies and sometimes unusual attractions, encouraging the public to explore the British countryside
Richard Wyndham was a descendant of the Earl of Egremont and was known as a printmaker, writer, illustrator and collector. He was educated at Wellington College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst serving in the army during WWI, winning the Military Cross. He is best known for his landscapes. His commission from Shell portrays Up Park in West Sussex, a Grade 1 listed 17th-century house belonging to the National Trust.
