Description
Plan of Seven Cottages, a Smith Shop, and Byar, intended to be built at Marston, 12 July, 1788, single folio leaf, 49 x 40cm, head of sheet showing sketch of a single row of estate cottages with a smith's at one end and byre at the front with, below, a detailed estimate for the work to be done by different tradesmen (including masons, joiners & iron workers), detailing the materials with the cost of each item, and grand total, [Provenance: Thomas Adams, Alnwick solicitor], short tear to one side without loss; Builders' Estimates and Prices Manuscript in ink beginning "The following prises as allowed by Mr Car as Underneath", folio, 16pp, stitched together, c. 1790. The account opens with prices charged by Mr Carr, who, on internal evidence must be John Carr the Yorkshire architect, with prices for work done for specific customers, including "Mr Sotheran's Roof (probably Grove Hall, Darrington". Other names mentioned in connection with pricing include Thomas Hall, for repointing, William Mallard in connection with the park wall at Nostell [Priory], joiners at Cock Royd at Horbury at Mr John Baildon House 1788, painting work by "Phillop Ince", work done at "Elmpsall Lodge [?Elmsall Lodge? Elmhall Lodge?] measured of by Mr Carr & his prises for the forgoing work including "enrichments in the dining room", mouldings, friezes and plastering work, some browning and general soiling (2)
