Footnote
Provenance: Bookplate of James Norman Methven to paste-down endpaper
Note: This copy of Treasure Island contains the following first issue points: 'deadman's chest' is not capitalised on pages 2 and 7; line 3 on p.197 reads 'worse' for 'worst'; the full-stop is lacking on p.178 following 'opportunity'; the 'v' in vain on p.40 is misprinted; the adverts are numbered 5G-783 (November). However, the following aspects do not correspond with the first issue points: the '8' is present on p.83; the '7' on p.127 is in line with the other numbers. The Yale University Library Catalogue, A Stevenson Library, 1951, describes the first printing of the work as having blue cloth gilt. With regards to the binding, Prideaux writes: "Issued in silk-grained cloth boards of different colours, some copies being in sage-green and others in crimson. According to Mr. Slatter ('Early Editions,' p.273), the book was issued in blue cloth lettered gilt on the face. The ordinary copies are lettered in gilt on the back..."
