Biography: Keiichi Taté was born in Tokyo in 1920, and entered the Beaux Arts academy there when he turned eighteen. Taté started to gain recognition in the early 1950s in Japan, receiving awards and exhibitions but in 1952 moved to Paris. He struggled to make a living, but befriended many artists living in and around the Montparnasse area, including Giacometti. He was discovered by the Director of the Drian Galleries in London, and through this connection, exhibited alongside some of the great British artists of the period, including Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.
