Biography: Nael Hanna was born in Neneveh, Northern Iraq and showed an interest in art from a young age, spending much of his childhood studying and sketching animals, birds and people. He continued to paint throughout his military service, until he received a scholarship from the Ministry of Education to study art in Britain. He completed a language and foundation art course at Southampton, before moving to Dundee to undertake his degree at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. A residency at Hospitalfield in Arbroath introduced him to the wild beauty of the east coast of Scotland; another lover of this landscape, Joan Eardley, remains a key influence on his painting. Following graduation, he travelled to Florence on a Royal Scottish Academy scholarship, before returning to Scotland to teach and paint. He exhibits regularly across the U.K. and acts as Artist in Residence at a day centre in Fife, which provides services to adults with physical disabilities.
