George Kemp 1st Baron Rochdale was born in Rochdale, Lancashire in 1866 and educated at Shrewsbury later studying at Balliol College Oxford and finally transferring to Trinity College Cambridge in 1884, graduating in the Classical Tripos in 1888.
His career took various forms starting in politics being elected Member of Parliament for Heywood as a Liberal Unionist. He served as Major in the 32nd Battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry from 1900 and again was called into service in WW1 as Lieutenant Colonel in command the 1st/6th Battalions of the Lancashire Fusiliers and was temporarily Brigadier of 127th (Manchester) Brigade of the 42nd (East Lancashire) Division during the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915.
Before WW1, in 1912, he stepped down from politics famously declaring that he 'loath politics' and in 1913 was given the title of Baron Rochdale, of Rochdale in the County Palatine of Lancaster.
Lord Rochdale died in 1945 and was succeed by his eldest son John.
