George Manby himself attained the rank of captain in the Cambridgeshire Militia. Upon moving to Clifton, near Bristol, Manby dedicated himself to literary pursuits. He produced a pamphlet entitled An Englishman's Reflections on the Author of the present Disturbances in 1803, looking into the possibility of a Napoleonic invasion, and was subsequently appointed to the position of barrack-master at Yarmouth by the Secretary of War. Manby subsequently began to invent maritime and lifesaving apparatus. In order to test a new harpoon, Manby travelled to Greenland in 1821, publishing his Journal of a Voyage to Greenland the following year. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1831.
