Hewitt, The Shell Poster Book, 84.
This poster was part of an advertising campaign series entitled ‘To Visit Britain’s Landmarks’. The series comprised a selection of follies and sometimes unusual attractions, encouraging the public to explore the British countryside.
Rosemary (1910–1998) and Clifford Ellis (1907–1985) were married in 1931 and worked collaboratively from then on. They designed book jackets, murals and mosaics, and also posters for many organisations including the GPO and London Transport. Their commission from Shell depicts the historic Chanter’s Folly Tower & Dry Dock in Appledore on the Torridge River in Devon.
