intaglio Roman, 2nd Century A.D, the oval hard stone carved with the bust of Manlia Scantilla in profile, in a rub-over yellow gold setting on a plain tapered shank, probably early 19th century

Note: Manlia Scantilla was briefly, for three months, Roman Empress as wife of Emperor Didius Julianus who became Emperor on 28th Match 193, in what became known as 'Year of the Five Emperors'. He was killed on the 1st June 193, and replaced by Emperor Septimus Severus.
