Auction: 5 February 2020 at 10:00 GMT
oval, watercolour on vellum, the King facing to the left in a full bottomed natural wig and wearing a white lace lawn collar and Blue Garter sash over armour, within a hinged and scalloped tortoiseshell box frame
Note: This image of Charles II is based on a portrait of the King at Chiddingstone Castle, Kent, by Samuel Cooper who was the King's limner.
For a similar portrait of Charles II, also see G. Reynolds, The Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Miniatures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, 1999, p.145-6, no.126.
It has been suggested that the artist may be the English painter Susannah Penelope Rosse (1652-1700), a contemporary and friend of Cooper's. Rosse is known to have produced copies after Cooper.
