Note: This sketch was made during Burningham's National Service in the mid-1950s, before he went to art school. He was working for the International Voluntary Service for Peace, helping to rehabilitate slums in Govan. "I have to say we were all hopeless", he says, "not having done any building work before. The plaster would drop off the walls, and the lining paper peel away from the ceilings."
