Footnote
This scene is likely to depict the sinking of the St George during a gale in 1811 whilst escorting a number of merchant ships from Wingo near Gothenburg. The two ships depicted, the St George and the Dreadnought, are flying the 'Red Ensign' or 'Red Duster' flag which was the symbol for British merchant ships.
