Lyon & Turnbull’s specialist antique clocks, timepieces and scientific instruments department have an established reputation for selling fine clocks and timepieces through both our Scottish auction house in Edinburgh, and via online auctions. Our team of specialists and consultants’ knowledge of antique clocks and the current market are essential to the successful sale of both single items and larger collections.

Focussing primarily on examples dating from the late 17th century through the 19th century, our specialist auctions have included antique clocks and timepieces by some of the most well-known and desirable British makers including Knibb, Fromanteel, Dent, and McCabe, and consistently offer our buyers a variety of styles, makers and estimated values. The department also handles other scientific and mechanical devices including automata, sextants, compasses and astronomical equipment.

Notable pieces sold recently include an ebony veneered architectural longcase clock by Johannes Fromanteel, which sold for £42,050; a 17th century brass lantern clock inscribed ‘William Bowyer’ for £22,500; a James McCabe giant patinated bronze repeating carriage clock for £15,000; a nickel cased humpback carriage timepiece by Dent, which sold for £16,875; and a mahogany stick barometer by Adie & Son, Edinburgh, which sold for £10,000.

Most antique clocks and barometers are sold in our quarterly Fine Furniture & Works of Arts auctions, with more contemporary clocks offered in our bi-annual Decorative Arts sales. Our Decorative Arts department has sold several exemplary clocks by the famed designer Archibald Knox for Liberty & Co., as well as other fine examples of Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau design, including a ‘Swallows’ longcase clock by Peter Wylie Davidson. In addition, small timepieces with silver, enamelled and jewelled cases are sold in our Silver & Objects of Vertu auctions held three times per year.
