The rare cabinet, by designer Charles Voysey, sold for £85,250 at our Decorative Arts Sale on November 5th 2008.
John Mackie, Director of Decorative Arts, said “This is a very special piece, designed by one of the greats. The cabinet was exhibited at the 1905 Arts and Crafts Exhibition and the original drawings remain at the Royal Institute of Architects."
As a designer Voysey paid meticulous attention to detail. His characteristic heart shaped motifs can be seen in the cover of the lock. John Mackie said “This is a tremendous price for a piece of Voysey furniture and demonstrates that there is still a strong market for exceptional works of art.”
The simple clean lines of the piece are typical of Voysey who said in 1909 "Simplicity in decoration is one of the most essential qualities without which no true richness is possible. To know where to stop and what not to do is a long way on the road to being a great decorator".
